Dutch Corporate Network Datasets

The datasets on the network of interlocking directorates among the largest 250 firms in the Netherlands in 1976, 1996 and 2001 are available below. You can also download and explore these files through the Explore Networks website (see above). The datasets are described and analyzed in my book 'Decline of the Corporate Community'

Files
This dataset is contained in one excel spreadsheets with nine separate multiple worksheets: Dutch Corporate Network Board Interlocks 1976 1996 2001 V1.xls Download RAR Archive: Dutch Corporate Network Board Interlocks 1976 1996 2001 V1.rar

Worksheets

Positions
The first set of worksheets give information on all positions at the top 250 firms in the Netherlands in the three years. The Netherlands has a two-tier corporate governance system. For each position both the tier (executive or supervisory) and the function (member, president etc) is registered. Firms and Persons are listed with both their full names, as with unique identifiers. NOTE: The unique identifiers used for firms or persons in different years do not necessarily correspond.

Board interlocks
The second set of worksheets give information on the network of interlocking directorates that is formed through multiple board positions of members of the corporate elite. It lists all the unique interlocks that exist between firms.

Example
FIRM ID A FIRM ID B Boardtype Firm A (1=executive; 2=supervisory) Boardtype Firm B (1=executive; 2=supervisory) Person ID Interlocker
376 397 2 2 3153
In this example, director 3153 serves on the supervisory boards of both FIRM A and FIRM B, creating a board interlock between the two companies. This list can easily be imported in Network Analysis software such as UCINET using the DL format (see UCINET documentation for more information).

Meetings
Just as two firms are connected through shared board members, the board members are connected through their meetings in the board. The last three worksheets lists all 'meetings' between corporate directors in the three years.

Example
FIRM ID PERSON ID A Function PERSON A Boardtype Person A PERSON ID B Function PERSON B Boardtype Person B
2 7 Member 1 3795 Member 1
9 22 Member 1 3776 Member 2
In this example, Person 7 and Person 3795 both serve on the executive board of Firm 2. Person 22 meets Person 3776 in Firm 9, although person 9 is a member of the executive board and person 3776 a member of the supervisory board.
